Europe's Stock Markets Edge Up in Mid-Morning Trading

LONDON — Europe's major markets made modest gains in mid-morning trading on Thursday, with the exception of the FTSE MIB in Milan, which fell 0.3 percent to 18,723.01. The CAC 40 in Paris was up 0.5 percent to 4,788.37, followed by the DAX in Frankfurt, 0.2 percent to 11,569.40. The FTSE 100 in London was flat at 7,188.15. The euro traded at $1.07, while the pound fetched $1.25 and the Swiss franc equaled $1.00 at 11:00 a.m. CET. Retail and luxury stocks were mostly up, with the morning's biggest gainers including Boohoo.com, 2.8 percent to 1.39 pounds. The Manchester, England-based company came a step closer to buying bankrupt U.S. retailer Nasty Gal this week following a Los Angeles court decision to approve the sale. The deal is set to close on Feb. 28. Jimmy Choo rose 3.2 percent to 1.60 pounds followed by Joules, 1.2 percent to 2.13 pounds and Marks and Spencer Group, 1.1 percent to 3.41 pounds.
